Rebelling Youths

Exhibition Introduction

The exhibition Rebelling Youths explores the quest of youth who rebel and search for justice in society. The impression of youth could hardly be separated from rebellion. While rebelling is a human instinct when they encounter injustice, youth may be able to express it more prominently as they are still eager to task risks when life is full of possibilities.

The exhibition will be divided into three sections: The Rebelling Phase, Laboratory of Revolution and Reflecting Ego. The Rebelling Phase examines the change of psychological state of rebellious youth as they encounter injustice. Laboratory of Revolution develops the idea further as the exhibition looks into the proliferation of rebelling actions in the form of mass social movements in history. Rebelling actions are full of uncertainties and viewers would witness the unfolding of events into rebellion and revolution, successes and failures.

To reconcile with the ongoing social movements in Hong Kong, Reflecting Ego will be an open-ended opportunity for the viewer to evaluate their own belief towards rebellion, courage and self-actions so as to clarify one’s role within mass social movements.

The Rebelling Phase

Ever since we are born, we get the instinct to fight against injustice and the formulated world; we call this “Rebelling”. Try to recall the days of adolescence, that was the time of strong emotions and struggles. Youths might have less experience in life, but they have the experimental spirit and stronger urge to explore uncertainty in the world. With direct reactions from heart, here is the rebellious young.

The Laboratory of Revolution

The process of mass social movements and youth involvement is always experimental and success is never guaranteed. What it may lead to could be rebellion or revolution. While both desire freedom, revolution requires a broader vision and totality of participants. Revolution is also significant as it could result in constructive societal impacts.

Punk Art

Punk culture arose from the precarious state of life in the UK due to the economic recession and conservative politicians during the 1970s. Facing such social struggles, punk youths with DIY spirit, channeled their angst and cynicism in audacious experiments in music, visual art, fashion and lifestyle. In that case, British punk culture, as a historical other, mirrors the similar rebellious emotion in Hong Kong youth nowadays when facing social pressure.

Hippies Art

Love is all you need.” – The Beatles

During the 60s’ in USA , the new generation criticize the mainstream living culture. While the middle-class society and materialism were dominant, the hippy community raised and developed their own distinctive lifestyle by revaluing the life goal ( Freedom and love ) and put their ideal world into practise. The movement has faded over time, however it has shaken society by presenting a new perspective on life.

Gender and Identity

Feminist Art and Queer Art evolved out of the gender and identity politics of the 20 century. Their ultimate goal of these artists is to empower women, achieve gender equality and explore the depths of queer identity, in order to cause active participation and effective communication between different groups around the world. In this exhibition, we try to cover gender art from the 1960s to the present, from the West to the East, hoping to bring interesting contrasts and reflections.

Revolution of Hong Kong

The Extradition bill in 2019 had triggered a series of protests in Hong Kong. During this period, lots of artists created different art work to try and spread the protests to the rest of the world, to look for international support, and some of them try to document moments and raise attention for injustice. Lots of artists take this opportunity to stand up for the community.

Reflecting Ego

“The mirror gives a true reflection of a man.”
― Lailah Gifty Akita

What we perceive from the world is a unique reflection of ourselves, affected by our own self perception and awareness. Only by gaining better understanding of our personal values, faith, confidence and action can we find our own place and responsibilities in this world.
