What does that mean to be young? At a time of rebellion, turbulence and the confrontation of a deadly pandemic, the meaning of being young at this particular moment is a topic for investigation. Since mid-2019, in Hong Kong we have first witnessed inexhaustible restlessness of the young people seeking for their political rights, following that we are confronted with one of the most terrifying pandemics in human history. The vigorous social actions in the city may be a reflection of the rebellious nature of being young, the sense of loss and the struggle to reconstruct life, on the other hand, may be an reaction against a horrifying pandemic. It is possible that these qualities have always been staying with the young people, the dramatic external situations just reveal and intensify them.
This exhibition is the work of the students from the curatorship class. Through the selections of artworks from Hong Kong, Mainland China and the rest of the world, three teams of students try to highlight some characteristics of being young at our time. For many of them, this is their very first curatorial project, hopefully it will give our visitors some new glimpses into the minds of the young people at this unusual time.
